“MANOSROI IV” Database : Thai, Lanna and Ethnic Groups Medicinal Plant Recipe in Thailand

Backgrounds :

Professor Dr. Jiradej Manosroi and Professor Dr. Aranya Manosroi together with their colleagues have initiated the construction of Lanna Medicinal Plant Manuscripts : Recipes – Diseases – Manuscripts “Jiradej 1”    Database in 1993. This database has been continuously developed for 31 years to MANOSROI I” Database and until now, “MANOSROI IV” Database : Thai, Lanna and Ethnic Groups Medicinal Plant Recipes in Thailand or “MANOSROI IV” Database.

“MANOSROI IV” Database contains medicinal plant recipes of Thailand, Lanna and over 40 ethnic groups in Thailand. Up till now, as of September 1, 2024, the “MANOSROI IV” Database contains 103,493 of the approved and recorded medicinal plant recipes. When completed, it will contain more than 400,000 medicinal plant recipes. These recipes were collected from palm leaf, mulberry paper, Siamese rough bush paper  manuscripts and the medicinal plant recipe books from all areas of Thailand. This database can translate Lanna, ethnic groups and other ancient languages to the modern Thai language as well as English and other languages in the near future. This database can search for diseases, symptoms, medicinal plants and active substances as well as potential ranks of all information such as the medicinal plant recipes or medicinal plants for any specific disease and vice versa. This database can also present the statistical reports of medicinal plants and diseases as well as other information in various aspects. As known, over 50% of drugs have been produced, derivatized and developed under the reliance on the background of medicinal plants. For examples, aspirin, an analgesic drug has been produced from the Willow plant and Taxol (Paclitaxel) an anticancer drug is from the Pacific Yew tree. Hence, these features of the database are very important and beneficial for the research and development of drugs, food supplements and cosmetics. “MANOSROI IV” Database is the first and the only scientifically complete database in Thailand which is also applicable for modern web application. Besides the correctness and systematic collection of the information and details of the medicinal plants and recipes, this database also contains the original copies of the Thai medicinal plant recipes in photographic forms for the confirmation and references purposes. Also, the efficient and fastness searching system of  this database can reduce the need of etymologists, who are very scarce, as well .

“MANOSROI IV” Database is able to analyze various data of the medicinal plant recipes by demonstrating the potential and feasible information including the statistical values which will result in shortening the research time and increasing the chance of success higher than the random methods of the modern and extremely high cost research and  development of drugs (500M USD/drug), food supplements and cosmetics. In fact, the medicinal plant recipes in the “MANOSROI IV” Database have been used for the treatment in human for over thousands of years ago, although they have never been tested in vitro and animal before using in human. The application of these recipes directly in human in the past is comparable to the clinical trial phase of the modern drug research and development step. Only the effective medicinal plant recipes have been recorded and continuously used. The indications of the recipes are always recorded that “after using, the patients will be cured” and neither death nor uncure is recorded. Thus, the medicinal plant recipes recorded in this database have already been proven to be effective and safe in human application.

“MANOSROI IV” Database has an efficient and rapid searching system. It is very beneficial for the development of drugs, cosmetics and food supplements. “MANOSROI IV” Database provides the information for the short-cut process with high chance of success for the   natural product research and development due to the proven safety and efficacy usage in human for several generations. “MANOSROI IV” Database is also beneficial for the conservation of Thai folklore wisdoms. Importantly, this scientific and systematic database will be the significant evidences for the long usage of the medicinal plants and recipes by the Thai people. “MANOSROI IV” Database can be used as the strong and   important credentials for Thai national intellectual property rights protection of the Thai traditional folklore wisdoms from being violated by other nations. In the near future, the “MANOSROI IV” Database is expected   to be available for public services. Finally, the “MANOSROI IV” Database will not only be beneficial to Thailand, but also to all mankind as well.

Professor Dr. Jiradej Manosroi and Professor Dr. Aranya Manosroi together with their colleagues have initiated the construction of Thai Medicinal Plant Recipes Database “MANOSROI I” Database to “MANOSROI IV” Database. These recipes were collected from palm leaf, mulberry paper, Siamese rough bush paper manuscripts from Temples, Traditional Doctors, The Research Institutes as well as purchasing medicinal plant recipe manuscprits from the antique shops. The Northern region are inscribed and written in Lanna, while some are Burmese – Tai Yai – Tai Lue – Tai Khoen – Yong, etc. Lanna are considered dead alphabet. It is no longer used for writing. Those who have specifically studied, have been ordained as monks and nuns or etymologists will be able to read.

“MANOSROI” Database have initiated the construction in 1993 which included “JIRADEJ I” Database / “MANOSROI I” Database / “MANOSROI II” Database / “MANOSROI III” Database and “MANOSROI IV” Database

The “MANOSROI IV” Database contains the medicinal plant recipes that have been continuously used for generations, more than 1,000 years. This Database has collected the recipes both in Thailand nearby countries such as Laos, Mynmar, Cambodia, India and the ethnic groups. The research and development from this database therefore, has a high chance of success, the “MANOSROI IV” Database contains 110,000 of the approved and recorded medicinal plant recipes. When completed,  it will contain more than 400,000 medicinal plant recipes. Limitations : Manosroi I Database / Manosroi II Database / Manosroi III Database written in Visual Basic which is a Window application that operates on the My Sql database and hard code allows the program to be used with Windows XP only. When Windows XP was paused on the development, the development of the program is difficult and it is also complicated to use the menus. Manosroi IV Database is a Website database and supported the current system. The program has increased data processing capabilities, both searching with multiple conditions, reports and statistics. The Database can rank, the Ranking, reducing, complexity in use and easier to use Linking of the monograph and vocabulary (Data Dictionary) can help automatic translation.
